Grace United Methodist Church Madonna Hall Gallery is hosting Dayton area photographer and artist Dan Cleary for a a solo exhibit. Dan Cleary blends compelling narratives with historical and contemporary images celebrating legendary historic figures from Dayton’s past. Cleary is the owner of Cleary Creative Photography.
This art exhibit is scheduled for February 26 to March 31, 2020, at the Grace United Methodist Church Madonna Hall Gallery, 1001 Harvard Blvd., Dayton, OH. An artist reception will occur on Sunday, March 15th, from Noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.
“The event features three exhibits that highlight Gem City achievers who made enormous contributions to this community and beyond,” Cleary said.
The exhibit will consist of three series of digital art that Dan has worked on in the past few years. “Wright Brothers-Then and Now”; “Kettering, Deeds, and Delco”; and “Marie Aull - Aullwood Gardens.”
The Wright brother’s photographs will be the majority of the exhibit. The images from Dan’s “Wright Brothers - Then and Now” photographic series are about the past mingling with the present. Dan uses original photos of Wright Brothers historical events and digitally inserted them into current pictures he created at the same locations. “In addition to all their other talents and achievements, the Wright brothers were accomplished photographers.” Cleary pointed out. In 2019 Dan received an artist opportunity grant from the Montgomery County (Ohio) Arts and Cultural District administered by Culture Works to travel to LeMans and Pau, France and create images for this series. Dan has also photographed in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Washington, DC, Detroit, Michigan and many areas of Dayton.
Dan was commissioned to create a new piece of art for the Wilmington- Stroop public library as part of the ReImagining Works project. His original 10’ x 5’ tryptic is hanging in the community room of the library and is titled “Kettering, Deeds and Delco”. “ This tryptic portrays Charles Kettering and Edwards Deeds 50 year relationship with each other along with Dayton’s ingenious achievements in manufacturing. Kettering and Deeds formed Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company or Delco which had several manufacturing plants in Dayton. Dan’s art piece includes historic photographs, patent drawing and a photograph of the Barn Gang barn located at Carillon Historical Park.
In 2018, Dan was one of four artists selected by The Contemporary (formally Dayton Visual Arts Center) for their Community Supported Artist project. Dan focused his attention on Marie Aull and the Aullwood Garden in Dayton. Dan discovered hand written note cards from Marie Aull that she posted on the community bulletin board by philosophers and poets. Dan rephotographed Marie Aull’s note cards and integrated them with photographs from Aullwood Garden to create his artwork.
