AFRICAN AMERICAN GENEALOGY GROUP OF THE MIAMI VALLEY TO CELEBRATE 20TH ANNIVERSARY
Cincinnati, OH – The African-American Genealogy Group of the Miami Valley (AAGGMV) will celebrate its 20th Anniversary on June 22, 2019 in Dayton, Ohio. The Anniversary Celebration will convene at the Historic McKinley United Methodist Church, 196 Hawthorn Street in Dayton, from 10 am to 2 pm.
Highlights of the event will be a historic look at the organization by one of the founders Arthur (Art) Thomas. Mr. Thomas was inducted in the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS) Societies of Families of the Old Northwest Territory. This means he has documented his ancestors as having lived in what is now Ohio or Michigan between July 13, 1787 and March 1803 (Ohio Statehood).
Tha will be followed by a powerful presentation by long time AAGGMV member, Dorothy Tuck on the genealogy of Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex titled “Finding the Raglands of Georgia (Relatives of the Duchess of Sussex). Mrs. Tuck was instrumental in tracing the ancestry of Markle’s four times great grandfather on her mother’s side. Mrs. Tuck’s research was featured in the London Times and she has appeared in a British documentary on May 17, 2018. Mrs. Tuck has authored three books and is a board member of the Genealogical Society of Henry & Clayton Counties, Inc. in Georgia.
The AAGGMV was founded on July 31, 1999 in Yellow Springs, Ohio by Robert Harris, Arthur Thomas, Bennie McRae, Jr., Jonas Bender and Madelene Norris and was incorporated in November of 2000.
Among the AAGGMV’s objectives have been:
To promote interest in, and add to the body of knowledge of family histories, genealogy, and communities in Southwest, Ohio
To facilitate networking among researchers pursuing individual family histories and cultures
To provide instructions and assistance in genealogical methods.
